Abstract
In Au pays de mes racines (1980), Marie Cardinal recounts her return to Algeria through a highly sensory and emotional form of writing. The natural landscapes are more than mere settings: they embody memory, nostalgia, and a reclaimed identity. This article analyzes how Cardinal employs the rhetoric of emotions—through pathos, ekphrasis, topophilia, and narrativity - to turn nature into a medium for intimate reconciliation with the past. Drawing on contemporary theories of environmental emotions, the study highlights the construction of an affective geography in which the homeland emerges as a full-fledged character, shaping the narrative and the emotional journey of the protagonist.
Abstract
Dans Au pays de mes racines (1980), Marie Cardinal relate son retour en Algérie, en convoquant une écriture profondément sensorielle et émotionnelle. Les paysages naturels y deviennent bien plus que des décors : ils incarnent la mémoire, la nostalgie et l’identité retrouvée. Cet article examine comment Cardinal mobilise une rhétorique des émotions à travers le pathos, l’ekphrasis, la topophilie et la narrativité, pour faire de la nature un vecteur de réconciliation intime avec le passé. En s’appuyant sur les théories contemporaines des émotions environnementales, l’étude révèle la construction d’une géographie affective où la terre natale devient un personnage à part entière du récit.
