Abstract
The Middle English translation of Hue de Rotelande’s novel Ipomédon differs in many ways from its model written almost two centuries earlier. While studying the astonishing recurrence of the phrase “the best knyght vnder shild” in the English text, we aim to highlight both its capital importance within the narrative and the essential changes made by the translator in order to prove the exemplary character of his protagonists.
Abstract
La traduction en moyen anglais du roman de Hue de Rotelande, Ipomédon, se distingue par de nombreux détails de son modèle rédigé presque deux siècles plus tôt. Tout en étudiant l’étonnante récurrence du syntagme « the best knyght vnder shild » dans le texte anglais, nous nous proposons de mettre en évidence à la fois son importance capitale à l’intérieur du récit et les changements essentiels opérés par le traducteur afin de prouver le caractère exemplaire de ses protagonistes.
