Abstract

Our work sets out to exploit the way in which Greek mythology is reinterpreted and presented in a less discussed segment of literature – children’s literature. Based on Rick Riordan’s book Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods (a real publishing success in 2014), our purpose is to analyse the means used by the author to retell the stories of the Gods of mythology, while trying to meet the expectancy of and satisfy the taste of young readers of the 21st century. Language and humour are the main aspects taken into consideration in this work, as Riordan adopts an informal style, seen as almost unliterary, and creates unexpected associations between Greek mythology and the contemporary period for comic effect. In addition, the ancient tragedy is sacrificed in favour of modern comedy, while the characters, mythical figures, are portrayed in a post-modern way, being strongly endowed with human traits. In short, our interest is divided between the post-modern vision of Greek mythology that Riordan shares with his readers and the literary instruments he employs to give it a setting that is both attractive and literary in value.

Abstract

Notre travail se propose d’exploiter la manière dans laquelle la mythologie grecque est réinterprétée et présentée dans un segment de la littérature moins discuté – la littérature juvénile. En prenant appui sur le livre de Rick Riordan Percy Jackson et les Dieux grecs (un véritable succès d’édition en 2014), notre propos est d’analyser les moyens employés par l’auteur pour redire les histoires des Dieux de la mythologie, tout en essayant de répondre à l’horizon d’attente et de satisfaire le goût des jeunes lecteurs du XXIe siècle. Le langage et l’humour sont les principaux aspects pris en considération dans ce travail, car Riordan adopte un langage informel, vu comme peu littéraire, et crée des associations inattendues entre la mythologie grecque et la période contemporaine pour obtenir un effet comique. En plus, le tragique antique y est sacrifié en faveur du comique moderne, alors que les personnages, des figures mythiques, sont dépeints d’une manière post-moderne, étant fortement doués de traits humains. Bref, notre intérêt est divisé entre la vision post-moderne sur la mythologie grecque que Riordan partage avec ses lecteurs et les instruments littéraires qu’il emploie pour lui offrir un cadre à la fois attirant et à valeur littéraire.
