Around the latter half of the 1960’s, in the academic circles around the world, and especially in the American academy, race and ethnicity came to the forefront as a new and important approach to the study of literature. Theorists belonging to all sorts of ethnic minority groups – Asian, African, Hispanic, etc. – became actively concerned with identity problems and with representing the white majority’s others. They became involved with the way in which the life of ethnic minorities was represented in a society dominated for centuries by white interests and cultural institutions. They were among the first to realize that race was a social and cultural construct rather than a biological one. The new scholarship on race laid the foundations of a new and productive direction in literary and cultural studies. How this set of ideas is reflected in Toni Morrison’s non-fiction and the way American dominant white culture defines itself in relation to a centuries old Africanist presence are the subject-matters of this paper.

NATSUME SŌSEKI’S YUME JŪYA (“TEN NIGHTS OF DREAM”) AND THE ANARCHETYPE – A DIFFERENT APPROACH

The present study presents a less known Japanese literary text written in 1908 by Natsume Sōseki (1867–1916) and entitled Yume jūya (“Ten Nights of Dream”) from a new perspective, based on the Romanian concept of the anarchetype. The Japanese text was mostly regarded as a literary experiment, and recently it was analyzed as a part of the modern fantastic literature. Still there are many features that make it fit for the anarchetypical approach, as this paper will prove. It starts from a range of questions regarding its form and contents, and it ends with the presentation of the main character, a dreamer, whose multiple identities are revealed by ten completely different occurrences that are presented by ten successive dreams.

Personalitate cu vaste interese culturale, cu un bagaj imens de informaţii din domenii cum ar fi: literatura, filosofia, estetica, literatura comparată, Alexandru Dima a fost mereu preocupat de „fenomenul românesc”, văzut atât în ansamblul său, precum şi în identitatea sa specifică. Acest om de cultură a arătat preocupări pentru identitatea spirituală, artistică şi literară, pentru o societate care, după primul război mondial, a încercat să-şi reconstruiască o cale nouă. Societatea viitoare a fost văzută de el ca aparţinând „societăţii de mâine”, care este doar generaţia tânără, educată, cu grijă pentru estetică, filozofie, literatură şi gândire, încercând să construiască viitorul şi să-şi creeze dea o identitate culturală. De aceea, adresându-se acestei generaţii, Alexandru Dima a creat o imagine vie a umanităţii. Identitatea este un element central în preocupările sale, fără a lăsa deoparte universalitatea, în care ne includem.
