SHAKESPEARE’S MISPRISIONS OF CLASSICAL MYTH

Posted On Jan 15 2019 by

The concept of misprision was originally defined by Harold Bloom in his 1973 edition of The Anxiety of Influence. The term itself was not unknown to Shakespeare, who used it in one of his sonnets. The American critic considers that value and originality are the result of a strong misreading on the part of the most talented writers, a misreading resulting from an anxiety that permeates the artist’s relation with his or her great predecessors, and which he names “poetic misprision”. Our aim in this paper is to study some of the ways in which Shakespeare ‘misreads’ mythological stories by …

For occidental cultures, scientific medicine has become, socially and symbolically, famous and renowned. The discipline may be founded on rationality; it also embodies a strong mythical dimension, extensively seen in publicity, literature and arts. According to us, the attention given to technical and scientific (technoscientific) imaginary is one of the major trends characterizing occidental culture. In particular, the transformations to the human body, made easy by consistently evolving techniques, are widely represented by contemporary literature. Nevertheless, these modern representations of medical (surgical) operations refer to cultural and mythical legacy. In this paper, we aim at identifying a part of this …

Objects create the sociology of the interior design and any transformation in the ambient mirrors a transformation in the mental structure of its inhabitants. Therefore, the paper is a comparative study of the traditional and modern environment that aims to outline the shifting from the moral to the functional dimension of objects, and to illustrate the manner in which they interact with man’s needs and reflect his way …

One of the distinctive signs of Postmodernist literature is the permanent effort of (de)constructing the text in such a way to please the reader’s great expectations, to manipulate him and, in some cases, even to mock at him. Yet, this goal is difficult to achieve and, thus, Postmodernist writers are frequently forced to reinterpret tradition, to deconstruct patterns of the literary tradition and to use all kinds of narrative strategies to seduce their readers. In this context, the present paper aims at analysing some important strategies and techniques (such as parody, intertextuality, de-construction) used by Petru Cimpoeşu in his well-known …
