THE QUALITATIVE INTERVIEW – BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Qualitative methods can perfectly complement both quantitative and participatory methods in any social sciences. The qualitative interview is flexible and dynamic and has been referred to as nondirective, unstructured, non-standardized and open-ended. Qualitative research is a repetitive process in which data-collecting, data-recording, data-analysis, reflections and generating new questions are part of a continuous comparative effort. This paper describes the main characteristics of interview as a scientific instrument, and then identifies the most used types of interview. It also presents the qualitative interview as the best option in interviewing immigrants, who are known as balancing between two worlds: social and individual. …

ON VOCALITY IN JOURNALESE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

The features of spoken language provide journalese with a number of facts that are transformed into marks of vocality. Thus, the journalistic text allows for the transcription of non-literary phonetic phenomena pertaining to fast pronunciation, familiar and informal variants of certain morphological elements. At the level of syntax, vocality is a result of parataxis and discourse fragmentation, avoiding discontinuity and the excess of discursive marks. All these, as well as several other elements that the present paper aims at evincing, maintain and favour a feature of the journalistic language: familiarity.

THE PHONETICAL ADAPTATION; THE MORPHOLOGICAL FRAMING AND THE MEANINGS OF THE ANGLICISMS INTO ROMANIAN LITERARY LANGUAGE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

We are going to deal with the adaptation of the English words into Romanian literary language. In this way, we choose a number of Anglicisms from the Romanian dictionary,Marele dicþionar de neologisme, by Florin Marcu, Bucharest, SAECULUM I.O., 2002. This is the latest Romanian dictionary of neologisms. We try to follow certain criteria in our analysis: a) the phonetic adaptation of the Anglicisms; we focus on the pronunciation, the spelling and the stress of the Anglicims into Romanian literary language. b) the morphological framing of the Anglicims into Romanian. We point out general aspects concerning the grammatical categories of nouns, such as: gender, number, …

A Cognitive Approach to Metonyms Based on Food

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

As a term of cognitive linguistics, metonymy is the use of a single characteristic to identify a more complex entity. Metonymy works by contiguity unlike metaphor, which works by similarity. Typically, when using metonyms, we do not wish to transfer qualities (as in the case of metaphors), but to transfer associations that may not be integral to the meaning. Metonyms help us make our way through language and, as George Lakoff and Mark Johnson sustain, metaphors and metonyms are the basis for much of our understanding in everyday life. Starting from this idea, our study concentrates particularly on the investigation …

BETWEEN-WARS HISTORY OF THE CITY OF BACÃU. THE FIRE FROM MAY 16TH, 1926

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

No more than three days from the taking over his mandate as the mayor of Bacãu, Ioan Grigoriu had to meet the challenge of one of the most destructive firestorm. Fire brigades from all over Moldavia helped to put out the fire. The balance sheet was catastrophic: 450 houses and the most important factories burnt out

THE CYCLE OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: EXPLANATORY MODELS AND PRACTICE POSSIBILITIES

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

The preoccupations for optimizing the efficiency of the didactic process most profoundly aim at its results, their depth and solidity, from the informative but particularly from the formative perspective. The action-pragmatic structures(abilities, skills, competences) as well as the energetic-axiological orientationones (attitudes, motivation) are achievements that persist for a long time, after a good part of the informative contents that implicitly “work” to obtain other new results over and over again is forgotten. Experiential learning, one of the types of learning designed to surpass the clash between theory-application, abstract-concrete, successfully developed by Kolb in the 80s, is of a large variety. The paper intends to synthetically and comparatively present …

CLASSROOM TALK CONVERSATION VS. DISCUSSION?

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

The paper is based on a contrastive analysis between two types of verbal interaction: the casual conversation and the discussion (as we consider the classroom talk to be). It is meant to illustrate the fact that the setting, the type of interaction, the aim, the character and the structure of the exchange, the type of relationships established between interlocutors, the spatial and temporal limits, as well as the style used establish certain differences between the casual conversation and the discussion although they are based on a common paradigm: the exchange of messages in face-to-face social interactions.

UNE RÉFLEXION LINGUISTIQUE SUR LE PROCESSUS DE L’INTÉGRATION EUROPÉENNE : ANGLAIS ET FRANÇAIS DANS LA TRADUCTION DE L’ACQUIS COMMUNAUTAIRE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

HERMENEUTICS. FROM INVESTIGATIO INTENTIO AUCTORIS TO INVESTIGATIO INTENTIO OPERIS

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Hermeneutics is the art/science of interpretation. In the act of communication there are two stages: the production of the discourse and the interpretation of the discourse. Is hermeneutics involved in any act of communication? Are there any differences between the interpretation of a written discourse (text) and the interpretation of an oral discourse? The purpose of this paper is to explore and comment upon two main approaches to hermeneutics: 1) hermeneutics aims at discovering the speaker’s/author’s communicative intention (investigatio intentio auctoris) – the discourse is interpreted in relation to its context of production; 2) hermeneutics aims at understanding the meaning …

REPORTATIVE EVIDENTIALS IN THE ROMANIAN WRITTEN MEDIA DISCOURSE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

This paper focuses on the Romanian written media discourse with a view to point out the evidential strategies used for showing that the knowledge conveyed by the assertion comes from a third (specified / unspecified) source, different from the speaker’s own direct experience. Assuming that the written media discourse makes great use of reportative verbs, we aim at highlighting the opposition between the neutral reportative verbs (e.g. say, state) and the verbs that may point to the speaker’s agreement, more likely his/her disagreement, regarding the reported opinions (e.g. claim, pretend). Special emphases are placed on the lexical elements frequently associated to the …

THE NEWS BETWEEN THE PRIVATE SPACE AND THE SOCIAL PLACE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

The private space is mixed with the public space by the means of the mass media. The newspapers, the radio, the television, the internet, are the ways by which the world invades the intimacy of the private home. I have chosen for analysis, from the totality of speeches delivered by the mass media, the news delivered by radio broadcast, because they are the most complex messages, due to the amount of meanings that they transmit to the receiver. Being conceived with the purpose of informing people about what is happening in many places of the world, by their force of …

ON THE USE OF EVIDENTIAL STRATEGIES IN ROMANIAN. THE CASE OF CUM CÃ

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Evidentiality comprises a category of linguistic markers responsible for indicating the source of knowledge lying behind assertions. Initially studied in the Amerindian languages that make use of verbal affixes in order to express that the information communicated in an utterance is the result of direct perception, of an inference or it is hearsay content, recent studies have been trying to enlarge the field of analysis to languages that do not have a grammatical category of evidentiality. Referred to as evidential strategies and defined as forms that are not primarily endowed with evidential meaning, but can contextually validate such an interpretation (Aikhenvald, 2004), …

L’IDENTITÉ EST UNE FICTION. FIGURES DE LA SUBJECTIVITÉ DANS LES DISPOSITIFS D’ENQUÊTE GÉOGRAPHIQUE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

PHRASEOLOGY AND CULTURE. ROMANIAN AND ENGLISH IDIOMS AS SPECIFIC ILLUSTRATION OF THE COLLECTIVE MENTALITY

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

In this paper, we accomplish a type of analysis that focuses on the reflection of mental patterns found at the origin of idioms in the English and the Romanian languages. The mental component of the meanings of idioms has a special relevance and we considered that acknowledging the way in which the cultural information manifests into language, and especially, in the analysed units, is not only a theoretical, but also a practical problem. In our approach, we identified a number of idioms, common to the two languages, despite the fact that they belong to different linguistic branches. The phraseological units …

LINGUISTIC INSUFFICIENCY – A COMMUNICATION TREND OR CRISIS?

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

The contemporary Romanian language is under the sign of uncontrolled dynamics. It is closely connected to intellectual acquirements and to the need of communication. Thus, the verbal messages are not only accompanied by nonverbal or paraverbal elements, but they also imply some structural changes, a process in which the receiver plays an important role. The consequence of such a process is a linguistic insufficiency that either splits the discourse, turning it into an intelligible one, or suppresses it within a crowded semantic point, which focuses the discourse towards the receiver who will bring forth his/ her exceptional linguistic competence. Our …

STRATÉGIES LANGAGIÈRES, DÉVOILEMENT DE SOI ET OUVERTURE VERS L’AUTRE : UNE EXPÉRIENCE EN CONTEXTE UNIVERSITAIRE ROUMAIN

IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS WITH AND AS MODALIZERS IN ENGLISH AND ROMANIAN

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Considering the definitions of modality and the distinctions made between different types of modality, the paper focuses on the modal verbs as modalizers (belonging to one of the four classes of modalizers) in idiomatic expressions (idioms and proverbs). It is based on a comparative- contrastive approach to the use of such modalizers in the English idiomatic expressions and the different ways of rendering them in Romanian. Special attention is paid to the modalled idioms and proverbs, i.e. those including one or more modal verbs

SELF-KNOWLEDGE AND INTER-KNOWLEDGE. THEORETICO-METHODOLOGICAL COORDINATES

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Self-knowledge and self-acceptance are fundamental variables in the best adaptation of the human being at the social environement, in keeping his or her mental and emotional health. The study makes an analysis of the main theoretical approaches regarding the process of self-knowledge and that of knowing the ones around you, the terminological controversy and the approaches that we can find in the psychological literature regarding the Self and the I. We have also presented some ways in which we can know ourselves and the others.

TOK PISIN – A CONTEMPORARY PIDGIN (ON THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN PIDGINS/CREOLES AND BILINGUAL MIXED LANGUAGES)

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

In the present paper, we discuss Tok Pisin – a language used in the region of the Pacific – from the perspective of contact linguistics. Firstly, we provide a linguistic characterisation of Tok Pisin. Then, we look at the division between pidgins/Creoles and bilingual mixed languages. Bilingual mixed languages, though they seem to be similar to pidgins/Creoles, differ quite significantly from them. In this paper, we try to define these differences between the two types of languages drawing on Tok Pisin as an example of pidgins/Creoles.

L’ENSEIGNEMENT ET L’ACQUISITION DE LA COMPÉTENCE SOCIOPRAGMATIQUE EN LANGUE ÉTRANGÈRE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

RELIGIOUS DISCOURSE IN HERMAN MELVILLE’S MOBY-DICK

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Religion, no matter which one in particular, has always constituted an important signifying system which has been wisely explored and exploited by scholars and artists for its rich display of “ready-made” parables, symbols, metaphors, or archetypes. Taking advantage of the fact that the teachings of the holy scriptures were so deeply and vividly present in the conscience of all church-goers, artists, writers in particular, did not hesitate to use religious imagery, religious symbolism, religious discourse in general, in order to convey their meanings more easily, and surely a lot more efficiently. Herman Melville is no exception; without the pretence of …

DIALOGUE IN VIRGINIA WOOLF’S THE WAVES

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

The six characters in Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves are perpetually speaking: their appearance is externalized through the convention of direct speech. Starting from the fact that Virginia Woolf herself called these speeches “soliloquies”, the purpose of this paper is to try to answer two questions: Do these speeches form a dialogue? Do the characters interact at a communicative level?

HAROLD PINTER – THE IDENTITY OF DRAMA

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Harold Pinter’s realistic depiction of characters’ relationships especially through their gestures, their interaction on the stage and their use of language is what made of him a staple figure of the Theatre of the Absurd. The bringing on the stage of slices of real life, the characters’ struggle for the true meaning of their existence, the reconstruction of original London speech as well as the creation of another type of language which exists beyond words are major issues which give form and identity to the new type of drama of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. The identification of the …

ANTHROPOLOGICAL DISCOURSES IN THE 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH NOVELS

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

The 19th century English writers such as Ch. Dickens or Ch. Brontë revealed the world, through their realistic, socially important creations, more economic, political and social truths than all politicians, moralists and publishers together. The current paper intends to show the way in which political, economical, social, religious doctrines tried to justify the so-called righteousness of the division of society and the inequality of sharing goods, as depicted in novels of the time. On the other hand, one of the major ideals of the time was represented by the idea that man is endowed with the ability to improve, at …

THE UNHEIMLICH TIME-SPACE OF SYLVIA PLATH’S POETIC SELF

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

This paper explores the poetic ways in which Sylvia Plath constructs her textual time-space in her poems. Maurice Merleau Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception and the Freudian definition of the (Un)Heimlich constitute the theoretical bases for the demonstration of the fact that the Plathian anxiety and despair could be viewed as the supreme signs of the extra-ordinariness of an existence doomed to endlessly question the linguistic relics of a past that refuses to translate itself. Extra-ordinariness is here synonymous to the uncanniness (the Unheimlich) that turns imagination into a dark mirror which distorts and blurs the signifying process. The two tropes …

DES AUTRES ET DE SOI-MEME SUR LA SCENE TARDIVIENNE

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by

Posted On Oct 17 2011 by
