Abstract

The article explores J.M. Coetzee’s reworking of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, focusing on aspects of intertextuality, metatextual reflection and the mechanisms of narrative construction through the lens of the strategies of representation, at such levels as reproduction or imitation, the concept of voice, doubling and doubting, othering of the colonial other, the technique of reversal, notions of authenticity and truth, deception and truth, authenticity and artificiality, or the limitations of the writer, as some of the major elements of Coetzee’s postmodern counter-discourse.
