Abstract
Le but de cet article est de rendre visible le défi que l’intersexualité pose à la représentation. Nous analyserons les mémoires d’Herculine Barbin - une personne intersexuée qui a vécu à Paris au XIXe siècle. Nous le mettrons dans le contexte de l’histoire de la monstruosité, de la pathologie et de la normalité dont le développement a marqué les XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. De plus, nous choisirons la représentation du corps ambigu par les planches de l’Encyclopédie de Diderot et d’Alembert et les photographies de Felix Nadar. Les images et leurs descriptions ensemble créent une sorte d’ekphrasis médicale où l’image et la langue sont redondantes. De telle façon ils mettent en évidence le fait que ni la langue, ni l’image ne sont pas capables de décrire un tel phénomène. Nous chercherons comment l’intersexe déstabilise l'ontologie sociale aussi bien que le droit. Analysant les discours employés pour le décrire, nous proposerons un concept de l’« écriture hermaphrodite », à savoir un genre particulier de la somapoétique
Abstract
The aim of this article is to make visible the challenge that intersexuality poses to representation. We will analyze the memoirs of Herculine Barbin who was an intersex person living in Paris in the 19th century. We will put it into the context of the history of monstrosity, pathology and normality whose development marked the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition, we will discuss the representation of the ambiguous body in the planches of Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopedia and photographs of Felix Nadar. The relationships between the images (drawings and photographs) and their descriptions together compose a kind of medical ekphrasis, where image and language are redundant. In this way, they emphasize the fact that neither language nor image are able to describe such a phenomenon. We will explore how intersexuality destabilizes social ontology as well as the law. After analyzing the position of the hermaphrodite in medical and literary discourses, we would like to propose the concept of “hermaphrodite writing” (écriture hermaphrodite), to wit, a special kind of somapoétique.
